Medicare in NY

Are you eligible for Medicare? Don't panic! We know that at first glance Medicare in NY can look a little complicated and scary but the fact is that Medicare is simple once you break it down to manageable need parts.

Once you receive your paperwork from Medicare, which should arrive about three months before your 65th birthday if you are already receiving a Social Security benefit check, you will o make a couple of choices. These choices may look complicated at first but they really aren't. Let's take a look at the first one.

The first choice you will need to make is whether to stay with the Original Medicare with a Medigap plan or purchase a Medicare Advantage plan. To make this decision you need to arm yourself with a little information. Below you will find the information for Original Medicare with a Medigap plan. For information about Medicare Select please see our informative article, "Medicare in NYC: Medicare Select."

Medigap Plans

  • Eligibility

Anyone who is or has been an American citizen for at least five years, paid a minimum of 40 quarters worth of Social Security taxes and is 65 years old is eligible for Medicare Part A and Part B coverage automatically.

You must have Part A and Part B to be eligible for Medigap.

  • Costs

Premiums often depend on your age, gender and health unless you apply during your open enrollment period. Premiums also go up for most plans as you age. Most Medigap policies do not have co-payments or out of pocket maximums.

  • Providers

Medigap plans do not have a network of providers that you need to deal with. You may receive your medical care from any doctor or health care facility that accepts Medicare.

  • Prescription Coverage

There are currently no plans under Medigap that includes prescription drug coverage. You must purchase a Part D plan for this.

  • Renewable

Medigap policies are guaranteed renewable as long as you pay your premiums.

  • Extras Offered

Medigap policies and Original Medicare do not offer any extras.

  • Best for

Those who travel a lot such as "snow birds" and those who need to see a doctor frequently may benefit from Original Medicare with a Medigap plan.

How to sign up for Medigap

Medigap is standardized by the federal government but is sold by private health insurance companies. To purchase a Medigap plan you need to understand that all Medigap policies will be the same but each company may charge a different price for them so you will need to comparison shop to get the best price for the plan that you want.
